I totally agree with you..I was once a head prefect in convent and way back then head prefect position was selected among the peers but of course teachers interference is crucial but only in helping us deciding which person is suitable for the position not forcing us.

So when principal takes charge later i dont think its going to work or do any better coz as you said the principals hardly speaks to the students ...so how do they know? by merits? bare in mind not all merits students do good in leadership...but those who excel in leadership are relatively good students =p

Perhaps what KPM is refering to should be applied at rural schools where I have experienced and seen during my trip for seminars in architecture that the students in rural areas are a lil bit lacking like attitudes, most of them cant even decide whats good for them- lack of knowledge perhaps.

My point is that when it comes in deciding who is suitable....all parties have to be involved. students,teachers as well as principals without jeopardizing one's right in making the decision becoz in the end it is not the teachers that will do the jobs as prefects but studetns =P
